The highest grade Mandolute offered from Philadelphia's Weymann and Sons, essentially a large bodied, tear-drop shaped mandolin family instrument with tapered depth, flamed maple construction with finely grained spruce top, finished in a chestnut hued brown. Selling originally for $75 (close to $3k in today's dollars), the uniquely shaped body is chamfered and bound on all edges, with multiple laminations and trimmed on the top edge with a delicate herringbone pattern; inside, there a system of horizontal scalloped cross braces on top and back, with an inset pickguard with inlaid pearlwork, with Waverly cloud tailpiece, bound oval sound hole trimmed with small block marquetry; reglued top cracks present including center seam, cosmetic wear and typical hairline cracks present on guard; blue Weymann label present inside. The three piece flamed maple neck has a bound pearwood fretboard with long pearl vine inlay, 1-3/16" wide bone nut, gorgeous pearl inlay on the peghead overlay, with engraved recessed geared tuners, and golden Weymann shield logo on reverse in silkscreen; thin original frets have some pitting with hairline grain separations to pearwood fingeboard, but a nice playing instrument with tons of unique warmth!
