A beautifully crafted hammer dulcimer built by North Carolina luthier, Lee Spears. Spears has been building beautifully crafted instruments for over 4 decades - having built over 2,100 hammer dulcimers. His instruments are well known for their high grade wood craftsmanship, resulting in powerful tone.
This particular example was built in June-July of 1983 and is constructed out with a nicely stained spruce soundboard with well figured walnut sides and back and maple pin blocks and edges. Heart shaped sound holes and custom etching surrounding them is a nice touch on an already beautiful instrument. This example has 14 courses on its bass side, and 15 courses on its treble side, with the highest four string sets being triple coursed. This one is currently setup and tuned appropriately for the key of D.
Cosmetically, this instrument is in great shape from its previous owner. Light surface wear is present, namely a scratch on its soundboard nearest its bass courses tuners, and at its edge.
Included with the sale is a home made hardshell case (plywood with nice latches), as well as a well made stand for performance.
