A fine 19th century banjo by famed Philadelphia maker,Samuel Swain Stewart, this example has the model name on an ivoroid plaque inlaid into the dowel stick. It conforms to the specifications of the Orchestra Grade 2 model. The rim assembly is spun-over, has a 12" diameter, rolled tonering, beautifully figured exotic wood interior; all original hardware present, including Common Sense tailpiece (missing rosette). The cherry neck has a 28" scale length, ornately carved heel (evidence of repair that was well done), ebony fingerboard with multi-laminations underneath; fine pearl inlay. It is a fine player set up classically with Nylgut strings. Equipped with original friction tuners. Some dings and scuffs present. A nice player.
