Masaru Kohno is highly regarded as Japan's greatest classical guitar builder. Having studied wood working in college, he then travelled to Spain to learn the art of fine guitar building during the 1950's. Kohno's have always been highly regarded classicals - often times being priced below what one would expect for their build quality. Masaru Kohno would go on to work with his nephew Masaki Sakurai - who would carry on the tradition of these well made instruments.
This examples label dates it to 1983, the label reading Masaki Sakurai M Kohno workshop Tokyo Japan. A standard model, it is constructed with a very nice spruce top with straight grained Indian rosewood back and sides. Internally it has very light 7 fan bracing (standard). Sonically it has a well balanced sound that rosewood is highly regarded for. Cosmetically this example is in very good shape having been only lightly used overall. The finish is applied on the thicker side (possibly poly), showing a gloss finish, likely having helped maintain the instrument all these years later.
The neck is designed with a 650mm scale length, and conventional 52.5mm nut width. The neck is constructed out of a Spanish cedar profile wih an ebony fingerboard. The neck is straight with a good neck angle, yielding action that measures about 12/64" in height at the twelfth fret of the sixth string and 11/64" on the first string - the saddle still standing tall with about 6/64" visible above the bridge slot on the bass side, and about 4/64" towards the first. All tuners function as they should, with the sixth string strings post showing a crack.
Includes original hardshell case.
