The herringbone laden HD-28 is a powerful guitar, famous for flat picking, used on countless recordings and live sessions. This particular example from 1985 has opened up nicely without much wear to speak of - making it an excellent choice for not only the player on a budget, but for the tone seekers in us all. This limited edition example's internal sound hole tag is signed by both CF Martin III and IV. Standard construction elements, this example has a nice spruce top, bound in herringbone. Very nice straight grained Indian rosewood back and sides, with a marquetry center strip - this is as classic as it gets. Forward scalloped X bracing and a thin maple bridge plate - it sounds just as it should. The original ebony bridge is present, but it is evident that it has been reglued - all stable now The neck is constructed out of mahogany and designed with a 25.4" scale length and slightly wider 1 13/16" nut width. The neck is nice and straight and has a comfortable soft V profile that measures .85" in depth at the first position tapering to about 1" at the eleventh fret (before the curve of the heel). The saddle has been taken down with about 2-3/32" of it visible above the slot - yielding an easy playability of about 5/64" in height at the twelfth fret of the sixth string and 4/64" on the first. The fingerboard is very clean as are the frets, with virtually no wear present. Original open gear Grover tuners present and fully functional. Cosmetically, this guitar is very clean, with only some light surface level scratches. Light finish wear on at the edges of its fingerboard, but purely cosmetic. Includes original hardshell case.
