Often imitated, the Martin D-28 needs no introduction. Good enough for the likes of Norman Blake, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan & Jimmy Page - not much needs to be said.
This example dates accurately to 1959 in good condition less some past repair work (read more below). It has the Martin "boom" that they are known for. Constructed with a fully bound, wide grained Spruce top, and a bound straight grained, quarter sawn Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. Internally it has a standard scalloped X bracing pattern for the time - while this guitar would usually come with a thin maple bridge plate - this one has been replaced with a thin piece of rosewood. The bridge appears to be replaced with small circular dowels covering up what could have been past pins to hold it in place - which have since been un-used. The saddle is still plenty tall, due to a past neck reset. The top is fairly clean, with a sealed crack at the bass side lower bout, a few sealed cracks at the belly, standard issue crack north of the pickguard, and pick wear. The back has a a sealed crack at the treble side lower bout, and one that matches the grain closer to the center. Marquetry maple and ebony back strip is in good condition. Cosmetically, the finish has worn through a bit closer at the waist as well as some light buckle rash. The sides are free of cracks, but do have some finish wear present, as well as an older screw that was likely used as a strap button on the bass side shoulder.
The neck is made of mahogany with an ebony fingerboard. It has a the standard 24.5" scale length, with a 1 11/16" nut width, soft V profile. The action is easy, measuring 6/64" in height at the twelfth fret of the sixth string, and a low 4/64" in height on the first. Further evidence of a neck set is present at the 13th fret, where the is a 1/4" circular ebony dowel repair is present under the fret that's a bit hard to notice. Overall, the neck set is very good and accurate using a straight edge to the top of the bridge. It has a repaired headstock, with two dowels present on either side of the volute, with visible, sealed old cracks that run through the peghead. The repair is quite solid and has been structurally solid since the 70's when the repair was done. It has a past re fret which is in good shape overall. The frets themselves are fairly clean with a recent level crown & polish. Replaced Grover Pat Pending sealed tuners function well.
A nice guitar from yesteryear that will be ready for the next pickers circle. This loud voice needs to be heard!
