Calling all luthiers! This flat top is looking for an experienced set of hands to get it back up and running. The Gibson J-40 features a spruce top with double x bracing, and square shoulder design. Mahogany back, this guitar was originally designed to compete with the Martin D-18, offering a warm cannon sound at a reasonable price point for the brand. A shorter 24.4" scale length. As is, this guitar needs a new top, with severe cracks that run through the top, disconnecting the braces. These guitars would typically have a thin satin finish, seen here likely with a later gloss overspray. The neck appears straight with minimal "fall off" at the fingerboard extension. The frets are fairly clean, likely having had some leveling in its distant past, with some typical wear at the first position, as well as in the fingerboard itself. The neck appears straight, albeit without tension, and the profile is overall very clean in appearance. Serial number 675447, it likely is an early 1970's model (with Made in USA stamped underneath). The tuners and bridge were stripped before arrival here. Overall, good bones for someones project, albeit a fairly heavy one. Includes era correct hardshell case.
