1962 marked a pinnacle moment for Fender, having dominated the previous 10 years in the world stage of American instruments. Having refined many of their famed instruments by 1962, the company was in business to sell off to CBS - which would change the company for years to come. The Fender Jazz bass defined music since its inception, with the 1962 models being some of the highest regarded to date. The instruments easy playability mixed with low end thump and the aggressive bite that has helped define Funk, Rock & R&B for decades. Every studio session player knows how useful one of these instruments are.
Here we have a very nice and early reissue of the highly acclaimed 1962 Jazz Bass. Built in the USA, it harkens back to this great Pre CBS era with thoughtful build quality and some unique but otherwise classic appointments. A superb and speedy maple neck (subtle flame) with a slab rosewood board (something that would change to veneer by the end of 1962) and clay dots. Chrome bridge and pickup covers, string mutes, an iconic three tone burst over alder - what more could one want?
1-5-1983 is written in pencil at the heel of this instruments neck, with J Torres stamped - a well regarded builder who *I believe* worked for Fender since the 60's. This example comes to us in great shape having been used very sparingly by its original owner (a guitarist). The neck is straight and plays nice with low action, albeit with a fairly maxed out truss rod. Nice old tape wounds are still installed (which sound great). Included in the sale are the original, unused string mutes. Original bridge ground present running between bridge and its rear pickup. Uniquely, these early reissues would feature the early 60's style "Stacked" controls - which is something that one should play to really enjoy. The stacked concentric pots allow for volume and tone of each pickup, the tone control having a stepped adjustment. This is a nice choice for any player who delves into the single tone control found on a modern style J bass - as recall and blend-ability between the two pickups is now achievable.
This fine Jazz comes with the original tweed hardshell case. Weighs 9.5 lbs.
