Extremely cool and custom Edw. C. Dobson Chimes model banjo, keenly similar to Morrison banjos in some ways, but bearing custom engravings and multiple namesakes on the rim assembly and pearlwork; from this, we suspect Lottie Brandon gifted this banjo to Winnie O'Connor sometime in the late 19th century. The double-spun rim assembly measures 10-13/16" in diameter, with decorative engravings on the interior and exterior of the pot, with a flower on 9-o-clock position and initials "W.O.C." in script at 3 o-clock; the notched tension hoop features Edward C. Dobson's name, NY address, and "Champion Banjoist of the World" on one side, and Lottie E. Brandon's name and initials on the other; Dobson's maker and model stamp "Chimes" present on the dowel stick; equipped with reproduction ebony tailpiece with inlaid pearl. The one piece mahogany neck has a 26-1/8" scale length ebony fingerboard, with fancy/standard Morrison type inlay, but with banjo-shaped inlays at the base of the board, and on the peghead, where "Winnie O'Connor" was delicately engraved onto the banjo's neck; lots of chipping present on the peghead overlay, cosmetic scratches on the neck, with tarnishing/chipping on some of the metal plating, and some roughness under the fingerboard; the neck is twisting slightly, but the banjo does intonate and play well. Equipped with friction tuners.
