With extraordinary precision and attention to detail, we're thrilled to offer a custom build from master artisan Doug Unger perfectly incorporating old world aesthetics with his expert level craftsmanship. The 10-1/8" diameter wooden rim likely started out as a Fairbanks/Vega Style L Whyte Laydie banjo mandolin, having been converted to a black finished Cole-like variety, adding an intricate marquetry layer of trim and binding around the rim's exterior edge, retaining the original scalloped Electric or Whyte Laydie tonering, removing the bracket band; all hardware is period; four nuts are slightly later; bracket band cut out was enlarged; equipped with reproduction No Knot tailpiece; some tarnishing present on metal plating, and finish lines/wear on black pot. The 26-1/4" scale reproduction neck is an exact match of a high grade Cole 5000 style (probably better), with a thick profile, boat shaped heel with intricate carving, long back strap with multiple laminations beneath, fully bound ebony fingerboard with intricate pearl inlay, including butterfly at fifth fret, scalloped nut with 1-5/16" nut width; equipped with old Planetary tuners with amber buttons. Some moderate fretwear present, with some finish dings/wear present on wooden parts. Plays and sounds great with only light forward relief, nice low action
