Fresh from the XEROX ROCHESTER INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL, multi-award winning instrumentalist and American Banjo Hall Of Fame inductee Cynthia Sayer will give you valuable tips on how to grow your musicianship and have a richer, more fun experience playing accompaniment and creating solos. You will learn techniques on how to connect and respond musically on numerous levels, whether you are a new or longtime player. Cynthia’s workshop is based on swing/hot jazz styles, but these skills can be applied to other genres.
Accompaniment topics will include:
Strumming – there’s much more to it than you may think!
How to support, add to and react to whatever is going on at the moment while maintaining a groove.
Soloist topics include:
- Creating a “musical conversation.”
- Where to look for musical ideas, dissecting aspects to respond to.
- Tastefulness.
We will also identify what creates musical intrusion and disruption.
*All playing levels are welcome. Cynthia Sayer is a 4-string jazz banjoist. Other fretted instrument players with an interest in jazz are also welcome*
