A jaw dropping, yet-unsigned banjo, likely made in the late 19th century, featuring a completely unique scheme of engraved pearl inlay, and detailed marquetry, complementing other uncommon gorgeous design features. The 11.5" diameter wooden rim is a 1/4" thick, with curly maple veneer, with thick, banded, hexagonal marquetry; original hardware present including grooved tension hoop, and stunning twisted hooks, and carved ivoroid tailpiece; lightly stained "wedge" tonering (part of rim edge), that extends about a 1/4" inside; long metal neck hardware. The solid mahogany neck has a 25.5" length, with floral heel carving on the round heel, extending from the fifth string area, and on back of peghead; thick ebony fingerboard w/ layer of colorful herringbone beneath, vertical rectangle of curly maple inlaid on sides of peghead, with more detailed marquetry squaring off the face of the round shaped peghead; profuse pearl inlay w/ delicate engraving is present in almost every area of the little neck, including a butterfly, flowers, roses, concluding with a flower pot (which features a home on the range scene engraved on pot itself), with owner's initials (MEH). Light forward relief is present, with some finish checking/dings, and a few chips to veneer.
