The Stromberg Voisinet line of instruments was originally produced in the 1920's by Kay of Chicago. These American made instruments have had a bit of a collector resurgence overtime, albeit with a cloudy and somewhat difficult to navigate history from one model to another, as specific models would be available for specific catalogs or stores. Many examples similar to this would be seen with pearloid accents, mainly in the fingerboard - making this example fairly intriguing.
This example comes to us, and is being sold in as-is condition. The top appears to be a stained spruce, bound with marquetry and cream plastic binding - which has held up fairly well overall. The top has a one long crack that goes from its base towards its bridge parallel to its center seam on the bass side. Structurally this crack does not really move, but it does pass light through, which is a slight indicator that this could be a solid top - a similar slightly smaller crack is present parallel to the fingerboard extension on the treble side. Internally this has thicker ladder bracing and wide kerfing. The back and sides appear to be similar laminate mahogany - with two notable cracks one present in the sides near the bass side of the shoulder, and one on its treble side lower bout. The small body measures 13 1/8" across the lower bout, putting it in the parlor guitar world. This example, while having a similar Hawaiian design to many others is a bit more subdued with it primarily being on the treble side - but this example has a nifty aftermarket, carved rosewood woman adhered just about where a pickguard should be - a stand out feature on this example. While the bridge is pinned in place, it has pulled up significantly, and it is not suggested to put full tension on this pretty fragile instrument.
The neck has a 1920's era V profile feel, constructed out of presumably a Spanish Cedar - the stained Pearwood fingerboard fully bound - albeit missing pieces in places. Original Frets are present, MOP dot inlay with some decoration in the first fret. The neck is designed with a 24.5" scale length, but admittedly, the bridge due to its lifting and maybe manufacturing defect is a bit too far forward. A wooden nut is present, placing the strings a bit too far to the outside edges of the fingerboard - but the width measures about 1 23/32". Original 3x3 plate tuners appear to function but are seen here without tension applied - the buttons having been painted black now patina'd back to a cream base color at their edges.
Includes original chipboard case.
