This is a bolt-on, round neck resonator mandocello custom built by Randy Woods in 2008. The instrument has a 23" scale length, and opts for only single strings instead of double courses, making it a bit easier and more enjoyable to play in a wider variety of styles and settings. The tuning machines are 16:1 high ratio planetary pegs which help with the larger gauge strings. The instrument has a standard spider bridge resonator, but there is no sound well. Instead, the cone sits on a circular wooden ledge that is glued to the underside of the top. The instrument feels and handles like a tenor guitar, and is an absolute joy to play. The tone is exactly what you'd expect - dobro-esque and deeper due to the C-G-D-A tuning, with beautiful resonant lows and low mids. The instrument includes a beautiful polyfoam case that fits perfectly (looks like a giant violin case).
