Rare and original Dobson 1867 resonator banjo with unique top-tension rim assembly without question attributed to Henry C. Dobson, though unstamped. Beautifully trimmed with with marquetry in checkerboard pattern, the rim assembly measures 12/7/8" across the diameter of the 2/1/4" deep rosewood resonator and about 10" across the actual head; rosewood veneer was used cosmetically on the exterior (including the"tension hoop"), and has chipped and cracked in many places (some grain related openings on sides/back); lovely wooden inlays in musical instrument motif on back of rez; equipped with brass top tension hardware (appears original), reproduction brass tailpiece. The fretless rosewood neck is setup with a 25.5" scale but could be moved; fanciful peghead shape with friction tuners, 1-7/16" nut width.
