The 1930's saw many guitar manufacturers rebrand, in an attempt at producing a "lower priced" guitar option. Famously, Gibson had branded the Kalamazoo and Recording King options - which have heavily gone up in values amongst collectors - but some might not be as familiar with Chicago's Regal brand offering the "Marveltone". This appears to be a style 3 model - a fairly humble flat top that is comfortable to sit with, and a joy to listen to. X braced, it has a voice that is much bigger than one would anticipate. This guitar arrived to us with the neck separated from the body - and John & Sam eagerly passed it along to our friend Robbie Mortillaro who did a great job reconstructing the pieces - retaining a nicely opened up, featherweight tone. The top of this guitar is made with a nice appalachian Spruce top with a tight grain. Bully bound, it has a simple but appropriate look for its era. It sits comfortably with a 14.25" lower bout, 8.75" waist, and 10" upper bout - the depth measuring 4" at the base end and 3.25" at the heel. The top on this example is in good condition, with a sealed center seam crack, and one sealed crack on the bass side lower bout (both cleated). It shows only pick wear, and standard checking otherwise. Internally, this model is X braced (about 1.5" from the sound hole), the bracing non scalloped, retaining the original thin maple bridge plate which appears in good condition. The sides of this guitar have had more extensive work, accomplished with great success by Mortillaro - notably at the neck bass side shoulder - nicks and dings present throughout, the back free of issue. The neck has been reset on this guitar, the fingerboard refretted and recontoured with an appropriate light radius. The neck is designed with a 24.75" scale length, and a wide 1 7/8" nut width (making it comfortable for fingerstyle players). The neck appears to have a profile made of Spanish Cedar, the fingerboard of ebony with a simple 3 dot MOP inlay. The neck has heft to it, with a profile measuring .87" in depth at the first position and tapering up to about 1.1" at the ninth. The neck, having been reset by Robbie plays great, with low action measuring 5/64" in height at the twelfth fret, the original bridge standing tall with a saddle measuring about 4/64" visible above the slot. Slot peg head, it has been fitted with modern Golden Age tuners which work and look excellent on this. Featherweight, clocking it at a mere 2.7lbs. Includes original case.
