We always welcome a pre-war Martin! While this one has had some work done to it over the past, it plays great and sounds even better. The comfortable 000 size, this has some nice low end definition and makes for a great fingerstyle guitar.
The top is made of fairly tightly grained Spruce, the interior with a rear shifted, scalloped X bracing - original bracing is present, including the thin maple bridge plate. Refinished, the guitar has a thick coat of presumably brushed on poly - which one might consider removing, but it doesn't impede the resonance this guitar has. In its past the guitar had been fitted with a hanger tailpiece. Replaced bridge, it appears accurate nice rosewood, retaining old plastic pins. The top has two plugged holes near its treble side lower bout, utilizing what may have been a stained wood-filler which has held up well. The same process was used at the treble side upper bout near the pickguard to seal a crack. There are a series of small nail holes present in the rosette which have been sealed - with one currently exposing an open crack. The top is very flat, with no belly, the sound hole region is not sinking. The back shows a small center seam separation, held together by the spine. The sides have a repaired hole (likely from an old output jack), as well as a at its bass side lower bout ( what appears to be from an old impact). The original celluloid binding appears in good condition.
The neck is made of mahogany with a dark rosewood fingerboard, with the 24.9" scale length and a 1 11/16" nut width. It has a thin soft V profile, measuring .81" in depth at the first fret tapering to about .95" at the ninth. It has been refretted, resulting in nice clean vintage size frets, but the fingerboard retains a fair bit of play wear - primarily in the cowboy chord zone (mostly on the 3rd string). While being refinished, it has a very comfortable and smooth feel, the profile clean throughout with a few light dings around the first register. There is evidence of a past neck reset, yielding great playability - the action measuring a standard 6/64" in height at the twelfth fret of the sixth string, and a hair over 4/64" on the first. The old saddle stands tall measuring about 8/64" in height over the slot - a very good neck reset. The tuners have been replaced with an unmarked gold option which function excellent and feel very light weight. The face of the peg head appears untouched retaining what appears to be the original Martin logo.
