Leland branded instruments were distributed by the Chicago Music Company in the early 1900's. It is at times not clear who built or produced the Leland instruments which were found in the Lyon & Healy catalogs, but often it can be determined that when they were Larson Bros made instruments. What we have here is an interesting opportunity for the hobbyist and collector. The Brilliantone series has become a bit of a flagship in collectors looking to get into the work of the fine Chicago makers - featuring a memorable 2" thick body and high grade appointments. The unusual body size should yield a nice tone with surprising volume and bass response for the unique design. With a 15.5" lower bout, these are constructed out of a nice tight grained spruce top, fully multi ply bound with thick pieces of abalone. A nice matching rosette with white binding at its edge. Internally it has thicker cut kerfing, ladder bracing, and a wide maple bridge plate. The back and sides are constructed out of Brazilian Rosewood - all in all a stunning design. The neck is made with a typical mahogany and bound ebony fingerboard with simple flower pearl inlay. The neck is designed with a 25" scale length to the body, joining at the twelfth fret. The neck appears very straight, albeit, not under tension. This guitar is listed as is. Future repairs include (but are not necessarily limited to), repairing a long back crack and likely checking the other internal braces. While this guitar has a pinned bridge, the bridge likely will need some deeper repair work, and could require a neck set once under tension - a bit hard to say in its current state where most of it appears okay. Cosmetically the finish shows some wear, but is otherwise fairly free of cracks and the like, again less the larger back crack. Included in the sale is the case it arrived in, a nice old Gibson gatoroid brown chipboard case.
