Bernie Lehmann was trained by master luthier Owen Shaw in Boston, and perfected his trade by hand building over 500 custom made instruments. He received a degree in Experimental Design from Syracuse University in 1971 and has been making custom stringed instruments since then.
A modern design rooted in tradition - this is quite the fine resonator guitar, truly unlike anything else on the market. It has substantial volume with a balanced tone, complex harmonics, and strong bass. With a unique neck shape, one can approach it as a Squareneck dobro, or play Spanish style - currently setup for the latter with fairly low action, but high enough to enjoy some slide work.
The body is constructed with mahogany, with a large 16 1/8" lower bout - equipped with a spider cone (with two vents at its upper bout). This guitar has an inventive and thoughtful back and side design - the back curving nearly like a Bowlback - with a depth of 3 7/8" at the base - narrowing at the neck joint with a depth 1 1/4" at the heel (see photos of the side profile for clarity). The back and sides of non figured mahogany book matched at the center seam. Full bound, it is quite rugged of an instrument, likely finished in high gloss poly - the binding in good shape with some touched up spots present (namely on the back). Single cut away, it allows easier access to the upper registers for Spanish playing style. An old crack is present alongside the bass side of the fingerboard extension which appears sealed and non problematic currently.
It is equipped with a. Lawrence pickup with a simple tone and volume control. While being a magnetic pickup - it does offer quite abit of sound off of the resonator that retains the woodiness of this instrument acoustically.
The neck is designed with a 25.5" scale length, and a 1 15/16" nut width - suitable for various styles of playing with a subtle radius at the fretboard for Spanish playing. The neck is Ade of a similar wood to the back with a shim of mahogany dictating the neck angle - which is nice in its current state. A fully bound (and nibbed) ebony fretboard sports iconic MOP diamond inlay pattern. The neck is nice and straight with no truss rod - the action currently measuring 6/64" in height at the twelfth fret of the sixth string - and 5/64" on the first. The neck profile is thick and resembles a square neck with rounded off shoulders - measuring .95" in depth at the first position and tapering up to about 1.15" at the seventh fret. The headstock veneer with matching flame and Lehmann's logo, it is equipped with nice Gotoh chrome tuners.
