While there are varying degrees to what makes a "Fine American Guitar" - many players have come to appreciate the value in some of the sonic and build elements to even the lesser expensive of that general umbrella. Kay guitars have always had a niche collector society who covet their high grade instruments - but it should be known that those who have the charisma have a case to make with even their lesser expensive lines like the "Truetone" branded instruments.
This Truetone branded dreadnaught began its life with the intentions of being a slightly better than student instrument. This instrument was recently serviced by Giltfree Guitars, operated here in Rochester NY. At Giltfree, many instruments that would have been neglected, have been brought back to great playing standards - with this example having received a neck reset, refret and nice setup. This yields a pretty suprising instrument especially for the price point.
A fairly standard issue dreadnaught, it has a nice amount of volume and good amount of power, which is what one expects when picking up an instrument in this family. A nice subtle antique burst, it is coupled with a very late 60's concentric ring rosette, complete with blue band. The original single ply semi translucent tortoise shell guard is elevated with cork, the original eight note Kay branding long worn away. Pinned rosewood bridge, it has a bone saddle which stands tall above the slot, having had a recent neck reset. A solid spruce top, with what appears to be a solid mahogany back - it is internally it is now X braced, the bracing a little on the heavy side, with a thin rosewood bridge plate. Fully bound, the sides have evidence of their finish having been touched up, with nothing too hidden here intentionally.
The neck is designed with a standard 25.5" scale, joining the body at the 14th fret. The recent neck set shows a thin piece of what appears to be rosewood below the fretboard and binding. The fingerboard is clean, having been recently refretted. This all yields a nice low action measuring 5-6/64" in height at the twelfth fret. The neck has a clubby feeling profile, the nut width measuring a familiar 1 21/32". Standard issue plate tuners feel a little heavy, but all function as they should.
Includes chipboard case.
