The Hofner model 500/1, sometimes dubbed "Beatle Bass" is one of the most iconic looking & sounding instruments of all time. Often imitated, the wood-y and hollow "Thud" that these basses are known for is something that has graced countless records - made most famous at times by the fab four. Produced in Germany, these mid 60's examples are still reasonably priced compared to similar quality instruments for the era. A great studio tool, there's nothing like the low end of a Hofner! This one likely dates to '65-66 as it features the 511 Super Staple pickups, along with the squared off control plate. Constructed out of an arched spruce top, with maple back & sides - it features their classic antique burst finish. Cosmetically this one is in good condition overall, with some pick wear and minor nicks and dings present. Original bridge has been bottomed out, more on this below. The original electronics are present and functioning. No pickguard, and teacup knobs are missing their pearloid caps. There is evidence of an old neck repair, with two covered dowels present at the 15th fret. Looking to the otherside, one can see an old repaired crack at the heel. Ideally, this instrument would need a neck reset - a decision best left to the next owner. The action currently measures about 10/64" in height with the saddle bottomed out - giving some insight into the neck angle, given that the truss rod, while being maxed out currently - is very straight. The finish has been touched up around the location of the old repair, the frets have been replaced in the upper most fingerboard extension register - with some slots cut into the binding. The frets are in good shape, having been leveled and planed in a past life they show mild wear overall. Earlier style open gear tuners work as they should. Surface scratches present on peg head overlay. Includes original hardshell case.
