Produced from 1934 until 1943 capitalizing on the cache of Wizard of Strings himself, the Roy Smeck Radio Grandes and Stage Deluxe was originally introduced as a Hawaiian model, and is considered to be one of the finest flat-top acoustic models ever produced by Gibson, especially following their expert conversion to Spanish.
Uniquely - this example features an incorrect labeling at its peg head - reading "Roy Smeck Radio Grande" - which this example is not, given its primary construction details. This fully bound 16" wide "jumbo" body was built with Mahogany back and sides - seen on the "Stage Deluxe" model. With a scalloped X braced straight grained spruce top, tortoise pickguard, and rectangular rosewood bridge. Cosmetically and structurally this is a great example with only mild play wear and simple past repair work. Cosmetically, it has a bit of sheen to it, well maintained from the previous owner - but likely oversprayed over 50 years ago. The top has a few hairline cracks, sealed, behind the bridge that don't go through the top. Old checking, light pickwear north of the sound hole, and a few simple nicks and dings are about all this retains. The back and sides are clean with expected light buckle rash. 5632H stamped internally at its heel block indicating a 1942 production year.
The neck has been converted as previously mentioned, yielding a very nice vintage inspired V profile. The neck joins the body at the twelfth fret, and is designed with a standard 24.75" scale length. The fingerboard is on the wide side, measuring 1 15/16", the profile measuring .90" in depth at the first fret and tapering to about .97" by the seventh. The neck angle is good, with the original bridge still present, with a replaced ebony saddle. The rosewood fingerboard has been nicely radius'd, again this repair work having been done over 50 years ago, prior to the previous owner - the frets showing some wear, but nothing overly glaring and certainly playable with good response in each position. The action is nice and easy, measuring an industry standard 6/64" in height at the twelfth fret of the sixth string, and 5/64" on the first. Kluson stamped plate tuners function as they should with old white/cream buttons.
Includes newer replacement black TKL Gibson case.
