We are pleased to showcase of Gibson's finest models - the rare Nick Lucas. Lucas was a famous jazz performer of the 1920's with hit songs like "Tiptoe through the Tulips" & "Painting the Clouds with Sunshine" - well commemorated with a unique flat top by Gibson in 1922. This example dated through its FON accurately puts it at 1930, and through the hands of its past owners has been well maintained.
These guitars have a truly unique tone, perfect for strummers and detail oriented finger style players alike. The deeper body that these instruments are best known for offer up a near dreadnaught volume, still in the 00-esque package. Huge bass response even with a light touch - these rare guitars have an even more rare tone. A tight grained spruce top with the iconic Cremona burst finish, the lower bout measures 15" (really closer to 14 15/16"), the waist at 8.75" and the upper bout at 10.5". Mahogany back & sides, it has a depth of 4 5/8" at the base, and 4 1/4" at the heel. Internally, the body retains its original flanked X bracing pattern and semi thick maple bridge plate - which uniquely has the pins right at the back edge. Original small rosewood bridge and pins present.
The neck joins the body at the twelfth fret, and is designed with a 25" scale length. The neck is constructed out of mahogany, ebony fingerboard adorned with Galliano MOP inlay. Original multi ply binding is present, the treble side having separated at the fret indicator dots. Likely having been re-fretted in its past, it has clean, Gibson low dressed frets with evidence of the original nibs in tact. The neck has a thick profile which measures .90" thick in depth at the first position - and tapers up to about 1.2" at the tenth position. The fingerboard is in clean condition less some typical wear in the cowboy chord zone - the frets very clean throughout.
The neck profile is in good clean condition with some expected finish wear at the open position. Overall the neck angle is very good, and the action very playable, measuring 6/64" in height at the twelfth fret of the sixth string and 5/64" on the first - the saddle with about 5/64" in height visible above the slot - no clear evidence of a neck reset in its past. The headstock veneer reads "The Gibson" in MOP, with some expected surface wear and scratches present. It is outfitted with era correct open gear Wavery tuners, with some evidence present of a past modern set of tuners.
Cosmetically this has some real relic'ing happening with pick wear present on the top, two holes likely from a past sound hole pickup, mild finish scratches, nicks and checking throughout. There is one non sealed, but closed crack present in the treble side waist. There are a few spots that appear to be cracks along the side that do not travel all the way through. Structurally, it is in very strong shape.
Original hardshell case included in sale.
