Lovely early example of a George Dobson Matchless model, featuring carved oak outer walls and dowel sick, meaty neck profile, and low serial number. The wooden rim is slightly out-of-round, measuring 10-3/4 to 10-7/8" in diameter, with black painted interior, and strongly grained oak outer walls with uniform floral carvings; unusual patent tailpiece. The 25.5" scale mahogany neck has robust profile, ebony fretboard w/ metal star inlays, possible refretted; metal frailing sheath present; clown shaped peghead with finish wear on either side on overlay; equipped with friction pegs and nylon strings. Lightweight banjo.
