Fender guitars are all well storied, from the players side certainly, but down to era of the production of each and every instrument. That said, some early 1980's Fenders are absolute sleepers in the guitar market. Dan Smith of Yamaha glory, arrived at Fender in 1981 to improve the quality control that had slipped during the CBS ownership. Not to knock a 70's Fender either, but Fender had clearly hit a problem with quality control and needed a boost.
The American Standard lineup of instruments would be Fender's most successful - even throughout the 80's. This example dating to 1982, is quite the good looking guitar with a fine Sienna Sunburst finish that is not too commonly seen - looking a bit like a cherry burst Les Paul. A nice three piece ash body, it has a suprising amount of flame present in the back, the burst finish show casting some of the grain in its sides. A nice playing and fantastic sounding stock guitar, this is a super contender for anyone looking for a high grade well priced American made Fender. Cosmetically, it has some wear, with natural relic'ing at the elbow of the body, as well as some checking, but it plays great with a straight neck and clean frets.
Original finish, it appears to be a thin nitro, as mentioned previously with some light elbow wear and checking. In a past life, there were some stickers present on its top, leaving a slight edge shadow which could likely be buffed out. Original grey bobbin pickups present, with original early '81 CTS pots and wiring. Original three ply white pickguard present and in good condition, this model with the pickup adjustment underneath the guard. Fender patent stamped bridge present with steel barrel saddles.Maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, complete with dot MOP inlay. It has a slim C profile and even taper, which measures .81" thick at the first position tapering up to .91" at the twelfth. It has a standard 25.5" scale length and a 1 5/8" nut width. The frets have mild wear, but all in all are in good shape without need for a recrown currently. A bit of wear is present along the fingerboard edge, notably at the third through seventh position. The action is low, with measuring about 4/64" in height at the twelfth fret, setup with 10's. The neck is stamped by Ventura & Casteneta at its heel.
