The Stratocaster is one of the most recognizable guitars of all time, so logically, the design has been copied and embellished for years - with Fender shooting back recently (another story). Conn, a musical instrument company most know for their student level brass instruments *did* for a time make electric guitars utilizing Japanese factories.
This CSE-1 model is a very cool electric, likely dating to the early 1980's. While resembling the classic Stratocaster, this one has a unique "upgrade" to some in that it is designed with a single piece neck through design. Solid hardware, this is a cut above for most copies and at a reasonable price point. A very 70's look, the natural ash/maple/ash body is complimented by the white guard with parchment pickup covers (replaced, but convincing knobs). The pickups and electronics work as they should and offer up a very clear and clean strat tone with great articulation. Cosmetically this guitar has some nicks and dings - near the output jack and the top near the lower bout - otherwise light surface wear and nothing structurally of note. The bridge has a slightly narrower string spacing compared to a conventional Strat - measuring about 1.9" from the sixth string to the 1st. Cool brass saddles, it has a hard tail design strung through the body.
The neck has a standard 25.5" scale length and 1 11/16" nut width with a fairly flat radius - it plays well with low action that measures 4/64" in height at the twelfth fret. The frets have been replaced in its past - each fret end tapered off a bit at its ends with slightly different results - none of which affecting the playability. The frets themselves are fairly low, but sing well without issue. The fingerboard has some wear present, a real relic from playing - the profile feeling great, showing old wear possibly from a tape or adhesive wearing out the light finish. It is equipped with a brass nut and aftermarket locking tuners ( a small hole present north of the 5th string tuner post).
