Dana Bourgeois is one of the modern worlds most respected luthiers. With a heart rooted in the guitars of yesteryear, he breathes some fresh air into the old world.
This Bourgeois is labeled as a 00 Custom, as it sports a familiar short size, with a unique pairing of some of the finest tone woods available. The Redwood top is coupled well with the finely figured Koa back and sides. While many recording guitarists prefer the tonal balance offered in a 00 size, it is truly on display here. Powerful and rich in harmonics, this wood pairing is definitely unique. The woody and open tone of the Koa has sort of a "best of both worlds" kind of feel to it, taking some of the finer three dimensional aspects of rosewood, with the "oomph" and warmth of mahogany - while being something all its own, entirely. The body has a 14.5" lower bout, with a 9" waist, making it certainly comfortable to sit with. Translucent tortise guard, multi ply binding, and an abalone rosette look elegant and not overly decorative, the backside with a nice marquetry center spine. Ebony belly bridge, it has a 2.25" string spacing, the saddle untouched. Internally it is hand signed "Friday August 17th 2012" - and features a thin maple bridge plate with nicely carved bracing. The fingerboard extension is braced with a unique, squared brace that is bolted in place to help alleviate any top warping while embellishing the importance of the joint, sonically. The neck also features a nice bolt on construction, making any future neck reset much easier. It has been outfitted with a K&K pure mini passive pickup.

The neck is designed with a shorter 24.9" scale length, 1 23/32" nut width, and joins the body at the 14th fret - making this a speedy instrument for the fingerstyle players. The neck is made of mahogany with a low oval profile, feeling similar to a very very soft V - measuring a depth of .831" at the first position, tapering up to .913" at the twelfth fret. This example features Dana's own snowflake inlay pattern that is both familiar but tastefully new. The neck is straight, and the fingerboard and frets are in excellent condition. The action plays easily measuring 5/64" in height at the twelfth fret of the sixth string, and 4/64" on the first. Open gear gold Wavery tuners sport wooden buttons, a nice touch for a guitar of this caliber.
