Extraordinarily rare, original five string Sultana No. 1 model built in the mid 1930s by the Bacon Banjo Company; John first saw this banjo on a swap sheet in the late 1970s before it was snagged by the previous owner; featured on the Jan. 1957 cover of BMG magazine with owner "Chet" Pickard. The 11" rim assembly has amber pryalin on the exterior and back of resonator, with silver painted interior, "flat-head" Silver Bell tonering; resonator has two-step flange with clover-leaf cutouts with circular etchings on back; equipped with original hardware including Knee Mute, armrest, with reproduction Oettinger tailpiece; some tarnish on metal parts, with color wear on edges of resonator. The multi-piece flamed maple neck has a nut width of 1-5/32" (a bit proud of 1-1/8"), with a pearloid fingerboard that has light floral painted engraving, with jumbo frets, 26" scale length, large peghead shape with fancy painting and engravings on face, with long backstrap (some unevenness around edge), and some finish wear on back of neck mostly in lower and upper positions.
