Five string banjo style neck, paired with a teardrop shaped "mandolin" body with a 10" bout. Beautifully figured rosewood back and sides, inlaid rosette with circles and diamonds in pearl, with spruce top with attractive inlaid rosewood and marquetry finger guard between the sound hole and the bridge; equipped with hand carved bridge, Wm. Gerke patent tailpiece and Champion friction tuners; tiny checkerboard marquetry surrounds entire top, with diagonal back strip. The 24" scale mahogany neck has a bound ebony fingerboard, with Pollman medallion inlaid in the peghead; frets appear original and have been significantly filed for good tone up the neck. Well repaired cracks present on back and top, with roughness on back edge indicating back may have been off; finish crazing present on darkened spruce top, with some dings and scuffs throughout. This is a fine banjo for "after hours" playing!!

"August Pollman was an instrument distributor in the 1890's and his catalog included both regular five-string banjos and mandoline-banjos such as this one. These instruments were believed to have been made for Pollman by Pehr Anderberg, a Swedish-born guitar maker." From BillsBanjos.com
