The Fender Rhodes was the piano of choice throughout the 1970s and has recently seen a revival of popularity once on stage and in the studio. The ‘Suitcase’ model includes a built-in amplifier and speaker cabinet, which doubles as a stand for it.

The MKII pianos were made between 1979-1983, when the Rhodes was at the height of its popularity - just before digital pianos took over the market. Identical in operation to the later MKI suitcase pianos, CBS gave the line a sleek new look for the approaching decade - the most notable update being a new harp cover with a flat top for stacking an additional keyboard on top.

Across the front rail are controls for Volume, two horizontal sliders which control treble and bass EQ, and speed and depth controls for the tremolo - which pans in stereo between the two speakers for a dreamy effect. Two ‘Accessory’ jacks function as a send (#1) and return (#2) for an effect loop. The 100W amplifier features two sets of speakers, one in front for the audience, and one facing the pianist for monitoring. Outputs for the pre-amp and power amp make it unnecessary to mic the cabinet in a live setting - and allow for ease of connection in the studio.

This MKII Rhodes dates to mid 1980 and is in very good condition, with typical honest road wear present. The tolex is worn, and torn in some spots but is overall in very good shape. The badge on the back of the piano is worn as seen on many Rhodes pianos. The harp cover, rail, front panel and keybed are all in excellent condition - having been well protected by the lid. Rust and pitting is present on the metal hardware, and there are a few cigarette burns on the right cheekblock and one of the white keys - which only add charm to this jazz piano.

This is an early example of a MKII and still features wooden keys, with a nice light action that plays fabulously across its entire 73 key range.
