"I always thought, that if there were electric bass guitars to go with electric guitars then you ought to have acoustic basses to go with acoustic guitars" - Ernie Ball.

In their wild-ride 70's beginnings, Ernie Ball hit the ground with some adventurous bass products. The "Earthwood" line (that later would go onto become their acoustic string division), would produce these "Acoustical Bass Guitars" with their massive bodies that would produce a pretty huge sound that is relatively unparalleled still. The Earthwood line would ultimately be discontinued in 1985, after producing only about 2000 or so instruments. THE John Fullerton, and Ernie would design the instrument borrowing a bit of design elements from the Guitarron. It offers substantial volume and *real* low end. A few variations would be designed, with varying depths, ultimately with these big boys (this one at about 8.25" deep) becoming favorites for players like John Entwistle.

This example, is constructed with an 8.25" depth. The top is made of a nice Sitka Spruce, the back and sides a well book matched Walnut. Internally, this instrument is "radially" braced and structurally very sound. Its oversized rosewood bridge is grommeted to the top to provide extra support, strength and talk from the sound board. It is finished in a nice gloss lacquer. This example is factory outfitted with Original hot dots pickups, albeit, without its end pin jack (currently). We can replace the end pin upon its sale.

The neck is constructed out of hard rock maple with a 34" scale length and a 1 5/8" nut width. The neck is bolted on (another fine design element for longevity), allowing for easy neck angle adjustments. While the frets are low in typical 70's fashion, it plays very nicely, the neck nice and straight with no dead spots. Original Schaller tuners function as they should.
Cosmetically, there are some sealed cracks and finish chips in the finish (see photos), but overall this is a very good example of a rare bird.

Includes the original leather fitted gig bag. The handle on the bag is a bit precarious, but still in tact.
