Oct. 9, 2023 - 76 TROMBONES IN A BIG PARADE
I spent a rainy Saturday reading over John’s corner from the past three years. This is the 283rd chapter! TIME to get back to the gym
My dear father-in-law, Henry Schnepf, is now 89 years old. He’s a patron of a large family and he has lots of TIME to just observe his blessings and enjoy a fine Manhattan!
Henry’s older sister, Frieda, widowed long ago now finds the TIME to start dating an "old" high school sweetheart again…at 94 years of age. She is TIMEless!
My daughter Karena Anne made some TIME from her busy schedule to join us at the Schnepf family Octoberfest.
Old folks tend to garden a lot. They have the TIME to do things like that. Some days I think I just watch the eggplant grow. Pasta Ala Norma may be on the menu today.
TIME….to grow everything (except the capers) for this beautiful tomato, pepper and pesto salad.
John’s Corner had a different occupant this weekend as I was not in the store on Saturday. I’ll make TIME next Saturday for sure.
Talk about TIME…this old guy just released a GREAT, new album.
76 TROMBONES IN A BIG PARADE
October 9th, 2023
Hello Friends,
In three days I will be 76 years old. This is the average lifespan for a white male in America, and, although I don’t have any plans for checking out too soon…it is the average. When my uncle Charlie, my mother’s younger brother, was on his deathbed he said to my mother, "Clara, I’m 75 years old…that’s about average… I was always an average guy… not too young…not too old… just average". He died two days later.
At this age birthdays tend to become reflections on mortality… I am running out of TIME, BUT, conversely, I have all the TIME in the world….more TIME than I’ve ever had because, really, when you are 76 years old, TIME just slows down…..if you observe closely enough.….there’s lots of TIME now. TIME to lie in bed half the morning just to think, to read, to watch, to love and then, perhaps, even… get to the gym! Maybe that’s why old folks get involved in birdwatching…they’ve got lots of TIME to wait patiently. Yes, TIME, TIME, TIME is on our side. Who would have thought those words from Mick Jagger 60 years ago would so aptly apply to my current generation.
Furthermore, every person, when they become older, is an open door to the past…to first hand history. I don’t have any birthday fundraisers, it’s not something I do. I don’t need any presents or parties or surprises. Instead, in honor of my birthday, talk to an older person. Find out about their history. Ask about what life was like in the first half of the last century. TIME is running out, so make history a living adventure.
Sincerely,
John Bernunzio
This past Saturday was a fine TIME at the annual Schnepf family Octoberfest ….hundreds of hungry family and friends feasting on bratwurst, red cabbage, roasted corn and my version of German potato salad, which as I understand is like regular potato salad but instead of mayonnaise you substitute bacon grease. Ahh, fine German cuisine!
Old folks not only have TIME to smell the flowers but TIME to watch their partners plant them, pick them and dry them…after taking TIME to walk the dogs!
Hopefully they will finish paving Main Street in TIME for Halloween!
