From the local newspaper, the Democrat & Chronicle on the day of the game.
One of the great stars of that team was Michael Meteyer, who lives on the west coast. He was unable to attend, but he joined us on a big screen video call.

I ALWAYS LOVE OCTOBER
October 7th, 2024
Good mornings folks,
October has always been my favorite month. Perhaps this is because it’s my birthday month, but it is also a significant month in the calendar year. Is the month of change, the month of harvest, the month of preparing for what comes next. October is the month of the World Series. It is also the month of football. Last Saturday night a group of my high school team mates got together to celebrate a football game that was played 60 years ago. It was the first time that McQuaid Jesuit had played the venerable Aquinas Institute in a high school football game. Aquinas, which was across the west side of the Genesee River the other side town, was always a powerhouse going back to the 1930s. They had never agreed to play McQuaid, which was the newcomer on the block. They finally agreed to a game on October 5th…1964… Yes, 60 years we ago played at their stadium which held 15,000 people. Of course, it was the most exciting and intense game that we had ever played and the outcome was determined in the last six seconds . McQuaid came out on top, 14 - 13. It was a very memorable moment of our youth.
Ten years ago, some of the teammates got the idea of celebrating the 50th anniversary of that game and included some of the players Aquinas. We all got together and had a great dinner and remembered that occasion. On Saturday, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the game and of course the number of players who are left to celebrate is dwindling. It’s just the course of life. The party was held at the "Next-Door Restaurant" which is the signature restaurant of the Rochester based food giant "Wegman’s". Danny Wegman, head of the family owned business, was one of the star running backs of the team. He hosted us all with some of the greatest food you could ever imagine. It was a fine celebration and I’m glad that Julie and I were able to go. There was some, tongue-in-cheek talk about having a 70th anniversary in 10 years… we’ll see who’s left. The last man standing gets the trophy!
This Saturday we are having a workshop at the Store. It is October 12th and it is my birthday and I have ordered a giant cake from Leo’s bakery in Rochester (my younger brother, Pat’s place). We will be serving refreshments all day so stop by and wish me a happy birthday and I’ll give you a piece of cake!
With peace,
John Bernunzio
The team today… yours is truly was the only one who had his original, varsity jacket….and it still fits!!
Julie is getting everything buttoned up around the homefront ready for the oncoming harvest and ultimately, the cold weather
A particularly fine sunset from our front porch in Penn Yan.
Good morning from the…..lake we’re hoping to spend a few more days down at our tin cottage before we close it down at the end of the month. I guess the fish just need a break.
Witnessing all the devastation in the Appalachians, we always like to make some kind of contribution toward the cause. We were informed that Pisgah Banjos, one of the companies that supplies us with fine, hand-crafted instruments, suffered great losses during the hurricane. As a way of helping the relief, I have instructed my staff to take 10% of the sale of any Pisgah banjo sold this week, and donated back to the company. Buy a Pisgah this week and help this young company.or donate directly through GoFundMe:
