The bounty of the lake..yes I do keep some fish and clean them and cook them. They are tasty and it also gives me the chance to be involved in my own food preparation, which is fine if you have the time, the patience and the stomach.

A TASTE OF RETIRED LIFE: BUT JUST A "TASTE"

September 18th, 2024

Good mornings folks,

This past week Julie and I spent time at our tin cottage in Branchport, New York. It’s about 15 miles from our house here in Penn Yan and it’s perched up on the hill above the west branch of Keuka Lake across from the state park. We’ve been going there for 40 years and it’s the impetus that persuaded us to eventually move to Penn Yan. It’s where we thought we’d go to "retire’. The word "retire" very fittingly comes from a French word retirer, and the word "retirement" actually means "to withdraw". The concept of retirement is relatively recent, having been introduced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Before this, people just worked until they died.

In my lifetime I have already retired twice. Twenty-one years ago, I retired from teaching, and I’m able to draw a modest pension. Twelve years ago, I retired officially as I started to draw my Social Security. Of course, that was not the end of my work as I still have the responsibility of owning a business. That responsibility is both to my customers and to the people who work with me. So, as we don’t see retirement in the immediate future, we enjoy practicing at it whenever we get a chance. After all, retirement doesn’t have to be a permanent thing. It can be just a phase. It just requires taking the time to pause your life and enjoy small things. So that’s what we did and we had so much fun that we’re planning on doing it again this week there’s nothing like the end of the summer when the kids have all gone back to school and we have the entire place to ourselves. That said…I am always on call and will be in my "corner" on Saturday.

With peace,

John Bernunzio
