This is the little garden in front of the museum that Julie takes care of every year. She plans new flowers and tends to all the perennials. Last week the town’s lawn crew filled the garden with grass clippings without paying any attention. Julie called five different places in town read them the riot act. She even got a call back from the mayor and the next day it looked like this.

From my collection of mobility scooters this one is supreme. I will be taking it around the Keuka Outlet Trail as it gets up to 30 miles per charge. I can cover the entire town and more!

I’LL TAKE MY RETIREMENT IN INSTALLMENTS, PLEASE

July 7th, 2025

Greetings folks,

Just a quick note here on John’s Corner to let people know that I am going to be taking an extended leave from the store. I have not told Julie about it nor the staff so they’re reading it just like you. I have not determined how much time I’m going to be away, but it will be at least three weeks perhaps longer. I’m fully confident that the Bernunzio staff will take on anything that comes their way with all the proficiency you  would expect. I haven flirted  with retirement every so often but it’s probably not in the cards, but I do get the opportunity to take some time off and spend on my own personal development.  So, what will I do? Where will I go? What’s the plan? Well, that’s to be determined, but I’m probably going to start a good solid exercise program and consult with my physician about what to do with extreme back pain which has seemed to flare up again. And then Julie and I are going to have to have a very serious conversation about this big old Victorian house that we live in and how I’m going to navigate the four floors in the future. I love this place and I love this town, but I don’t know if it’s in my future. Of course, I’ll be 78 this October so "future" is a rather nebulous term.

Additionally, I’m running out of ideas. John’s corner sometimes becomes a burden, like an homework  assignment that I have to finish before Sunday night. So another part of the plan is to create some important memories that I can pass on and that only happens if I get out and do something different. I’m sure I will spend a bit of time down at our "tin cottage"  in Branchport, New York and I will dust off my fishing poles to see if I can round up some smallmouth bass. I have not ruled out a side trip to see an enormous collection of instruments that may be coming up for sale,  so it won’t be all play and no work.

With peace,

John Bernunzio
