The Supro Big Star S6451TR was introduced in 1964, and was one of many models offered by Valco between the 1930's and 1960's. A 35 watt combo amp with 2x12" speakers, the Big Star also featured tremolo and reverb, hence the "TR" designation. Featuring unique construction with the preamp circuitry in the upper chassis, and the power amp circuitry mounted in a lower chassis, this amp is just as serviceable as it is playable.

The reverb tanks in Supro amps of this era were housed in cardboard enclosures - and are often seen replaced with modern metal housed tanks due to the originals being damaged or suffering excessive electrical interference. In this example, the reverb tank is missing, the driver tube is removed, and the connections to the reverb circuitry have been disconnected. These modifications could easily be reversed if one wished, but it is still a fantastic sounding and working amp otherwise, so we decided to leave it as is.

Other modifications include the addition of a 3 prong, earthed mains cord (for safety!), a Hammond PT, new cathode bypass caps (Sprague atom) and a pair of non original Fender 12" speakers. The original OT and pots are stamped 1965, giving this amp an approximate production year of 1965-66.

Cosmetically the amp is in very good condition overall, with the beautiful blueish/gray tolex in fine condition. A few rips in the grille cloth are present, but it is fairly intact and still sparkly. The faceplate is in decent shape, with some pitting and wear on the screen print present, but everything is still legible.

This amp packs a mean punch sonically, and has some beautiful mid-60's aesthetics. It would be an excellent choice for anyone searching for a vintage Supro amp on a budget.
