A nice piece of history from the Santa Cruz Guitar Company - that dare I say has been upgraded! The H model was known as being a favorite of Richard Hoovers, the famed SCGC luthier who built this particular example in 1991. Sonically, it's no wonder Hoover liked these models - it's a finger pickers dream, with superb volume & sustain and a nice balanced and well aged tone. Someone on a forum called it "friendly", and I simply must agree. Upon arrival, this example had a crack in the volute - an interesting but semi common issue amongst guitars with single action truss rods that have too much pressure applied. We had this expertly repaired by our dear friend Robbie Mortillaro, who virtually erased the problems. By removing the fingerboard and the non functioning original rod - Robbie was able to clean the crack to near invisibility (see photos). Robbie then cleaned out the rods channel and installed a thin piece of carbon fiber to line the route - which will mitigate any internal pressure on a potential weak spot in the Mahogany. A dual action modern rod was then added, meaning you won't need a "special" tool to work on this guitar in a future setup. Robbie did a fantastic neck reset, and rebuilt the saddle with more than plenty of height for any future adjusting. Cosmetically this guitar is very clean, even after the previously mentioned repair work. Slight wear is present in the finish around its binding, but the binding is strong and intact. Some scuffs and a few nicks are present but nothing remotely problematic, and only typical for a well seasoned 30+ year old instrument. It is constructed with an X braced Sitka Spruce top, and solid Indian rosewood back & sides. Multi-ply binding on the top & back with a decorative back center strip. It has a 25.5" scale length and joins the neck at the 14th fret. The neck has a comfortable C profile that is fully bound and measures .81" thick at the first position tapering to about 1.02" at the twelfth fret. The elegant and simple ebony fingerboard has small MOP dot inlays, and the frets themselves having been recently crowned are level and in great shape with plenty of life in them. It has a 1 23/32" nut width, and the action currently measures 6/64" in height at the twelfth fret, with 12/64" of saddle visible above the slot (more than plenty). Original Schaller tuners are present and functioning just as they should. Comes with the original hardshell case.
