Kindly remember, the ridiculous hype that offends so many is not of our making...

Bernunzio's is pleased to offer for sale this silver Klon Centaur, a truly rare offering from the middle of its original run.

First launched in 1994, the Klon Centaur was the product of over two years of research and development by Bill Finnegan and an MIT graduate with a degree in Electrical Engineering. First launched in a large, three knobbed gold enclosure with a centaur graphic, the silver version joined it soon after and was produced alongside it for its entire production run. In 2003, the centaur graphics were dropped and the simple enclosure remained the same until Bill stopped accepting orders in 2009.

The Klon quickly gained popularity and became revered among guitar players for its excellent sounding buffer, "transparent" clean boost, and overdrive. Available only by phone and with each one hand assembled by Bill Finnegan himself, the pedal instantly found itself in high demand, with long waiting lists and high prices for used units, a source of much controversy amongst buyers.

Sonically it lives up to expectations, and truly a fine sounding overdrive pedal. Running at 18 volts by aid of a charge pump, it gives you a ton of headroom and works exceptionally well as a clean boost. Its characteristic low end roll off and mid boost is perfectly voiced for guitar, and adds a sparkle to anything you run through it. A single treble knob in the middle is your only tone control, and in this particular unit gives it a fair amount of bite. The gain knob is the final control and has a wide range from totally clean to a fairly dirty overdrive. It is highly sensitive to your pick attack, interactive with the volume knob of your guitar, and is ideal for pushing any tube amp into overdrive.

This Klon comes to us in like new condition, having sat unused in the box by the original owner for many years. Some light aging on the metal casing, typical of the silver version, and some light scratches on the bottom of the case are the only wear present. A relatively low serial number and 1999 pot codes indicate that it's a very early production silver “non-horsie” Klon, likely made around 2003. The presence of R10 in the circuit further points towards an early production, as this component was omitted from later Klon's and had a simple jumper installed in its place. Inside the characteristic black epoxy is present and undisturbed on the PCB, an effort to protect their original circuit from copycats. The sticker on the bottom with the website is present and completely intact.

Included in the sale is the original plain white box it was shipped in, instruction manual with suggested settings, two additional pieces of paper with information about its power supply requirements, and the 9V adaptor plug for the power supply.

With many clones available today, the Klon has been truly democratized and is available to the masses and its once unique circuit has been widely cloned. To some however, nothing quite stands up to the original and the hype surrounding them continues to increase to this day.
