Joseph Bohmann produced some very fine fretted stringed instruments around the turn of the 1900's. This bowlback, while being slightly more understated than others we've seen is maybe the most playable, with a nice dark and warm sound - ready for its next career.
Constructed with a wide grained spruce top and 9 stave maple back - it is in strong condition currently. There are two sealed cracks present in the top, parallel to the first and fourth corses of strings, between the tailpiece and bridge. Pick wear and cosmetic nicks and dings are present, typical for a 100+ year old instrument. This example features Bohmann's patented arm rest / tailpiece cover, which puts the players picking hand in a very comfortable position. Original bridge is in good shape, not appearing to have been lowered. The back has some sealed separations between the staves - all structurally in good condition. The back appears to have had its finish touched up. Internally, it features the original label with ink drawing of Joseph Bohmann, along with a hand written 14/309 serial (possibly dating this one to 1914).
The neck is designed with a standard 13" scale length, and is composed of a mahogany profile, with a stained pear wood fingerboard. The fingerboard has some well sealed cracks, the bar frets showing virtually no wear. The action as mentioned previously is very playable measuring a mere 3/64" in height at the neck joint - currently strung with Fisoma flat wounds. Original tuners present, with patent plate on the rear of the peg head.
All in all, a very playable and very nice sounding example.
No case.
