The Gibson L-7 has long been a favorite among players, offering a more accessible alternative to the highly regarded L-5. Since its introduction in the mid-1930s, the model has been a mainstay on bandstands, prized for its rich, resonant acoustic voice and remarkable projection. Early examples saw various changes to their bracing designs and were typically finished in sunburst, while blonde versions—such as the example offered here—did not appear until 1940.
This 1941 Blonde example L-7 is one such fine instrument, complete with everything to compete with its fancy L5 counterpart - with a much more approachable price point that has consistently increased in value. By this point, this body was constructed with a carved spruce top, with a 17" lower bout. Laminate flame maple back and sides, seen here with a solid one piece that looks absolutely incredible. Fully bound, the binding is in great shape without shrinkage. It has a slightly later hanger tailpiece that is suitable fit for the guitar. Rosewood bridge, the action super playable with plenty of room for adjustment at the thumb screws. The original pickguard is included with most of the original mounting hardware; the guard having been cut for the included aftermaket Herald pickup to be placed at the neck extension. Cosmetically, the body is in very good shape, free of cracks or structural damage - just simple checking, and a notable scrape at the treble side lower bout. and light surface play wear. Internally, it has the standard issue two tone bar bracing - still with earlier white Kalamazoo label.
The neck is designed with the standard 25.5" scale length, the nut width measuring 1 23/32". It is constructed out of two very nice pieces of flamed maple with a rosewood center strip - the fingerboard full bound and made of rosewood with the iconic split MOP parallelogram inlay. Maybe most interesting is the "double stinger", black lacquer that runs on the back side of the peg head and at the heel - both with checking throughout, but no signs of cracks or past repair. Refretted, the nibs have been cut down - the frets themselves clean of divots, but fairly low from past leveling - a refret possibly in its future, allowing the opportunity for the next owner to decide on their fret size. The fingerboard itself shows some divots near the open position primarily. The neck is nice & straight with a great neck angle as mentioned previously - the bridge still with plenty of room for adjustment - the action measuring a comfortable 4/64" in height at the twelfth fret of the first string and about 5/64" on the sixth. The notes ring true in each register without issue - plenty of sustain and power. The peg head veneer features the iconic 40's "fat script" and crown MOP inlay. Era correct tuners, these are unmarked and open gear.
Includes original red line hardshell case.
