This Gibson GB-4, with its distinguished "moccasin" shaped headstock and fleru-de-lis inlay (reminiscent of the Gibson made mandolins of the same era), is one exceptional looking AND sounding instrument. This particular example defies common perceptions of how 'playable' vintage instruments are or are not, as it is an absolute joy to pick any style of music with it. Built around 1923, the GB-4 weighs in at just under 8 lbs., and features a 14" rim (3/4" thick) with 34 hooks and brass tone ring, a 24-3/4" scale length, and every option available from Gibson at the time! These include a wire armrest, a creme-colored pick guard and a large 14" trapdoor resonator in sunburst finish. The resonator (referred to as a 'tone-projector' by Gibson catalogs; a Lloyd Loar design) provides a bit more clarity compared with the open-back sound. The banjo retains its original calf skin head with no tears or rips, as well as the original bridge! The neck angle has been corrected, making this a real breeze to play up and down the fretboard, and a piece of felt has been added to prevent excess contact/vibration between the tailpiece and the head. The tone is warm and plunky, with a relatively 'flat' sound that gives the instrument its unique character and makes it suitable for just about any style of play. Compared to the similar GB-3, the neck is slightly wider, and the fingerboard is radiused, making it even more comfortable for guitar players looking to incorporate the banjo sound. Included with sale is the original 'Gibson Faultless No. 441' carrying case, in decent condition for its age, with some moderate wear inside and out, but still completely functional. Reglued piece of binding on side of neck.
