Extraordinarily rare, a two-point Scroll mandolin from John D'Angelico (1905-1964), serial number 127 just the third entry for a mandolin on his ledger, dated 4/09/1940, for R. Stevenson, whose name is engraved into the inlaid pearl block on the twelfth fret; a commanding instrument, truly one of the best mandolins we've encountered, with a complete palette of tonal and dynamic possibilities at your disposal, from whisper to bark; one of 250-300 mandolins by D'Angelico, a clean example of the highest grade offered, the Scroll model, in original Lifton case. Multi-bound and fully carved, the arched body features two off-set points, bound f-holes, with parallel bracing system, and equipped with original Waverly tailpiece; gently sunbursted, with a finely grained Sitka spruce top, with gorgeous flamed maple back and sides; some light surface scratching present, impression from pickguard block and screw holes, tiny finish ding on treble point edge, two lines of grainy finish checking on treble side upper bout with small amount of checking on same top edge; equipped with original adjustable ebony bridge. The one piece 13-7/8" scale maple neck has a fully bound, 24 fret neck with tapered and radiused ebony fingerboard with extension, pearl block inlays (3, 5, 7, 10, 12), 1-1/4" wide nut width, masterfully carved violin scroll type peghead shape, bound peghead overlay, with maker's signature and NY engraved into pearl inlay on face; equipped with original geared Waverly engraved plate tuners; very light surface wear present, with hardly any fret wear; little to no relief present on neck, making this a fantastic player. Included in sale is original Lifton hard case with red velvet interior, black Keratol exterior.
