Signed and dated, a truly unique American violin built by K. E. Smith, Birmingham, Alabama in 1928, with exceptional rich tone, perfect for bluegrass or folk styles; truly a time machine, there is even a rattlesnake rattle inside for good luck. With significant arch, the body has a two piece flamed maple back and sides, with a tightly grained spruce top with delicate purfling around with roughly cut f holes; several repaired top cracks present on either side of the tailpiece extending from the saddle, and near lower f hole; purfling has shrunk slightly presenting an edge, as well as cosmetic wear throughout, particularly on the sides and edges. The maple neck has an ebony fingerboard with a shim underneath possibly indicating past re-graduation, with ebony tuners, and nicely carved scroll. Included is old original case with lacquered exterior/green interior.
