Some production made guitars create a lore that often times supersedes the instrument. One such guitar, is this "I series" Stratocaster we are pleased to present - the "I" referring to its serial number stamp. Passing as an American Standard, it is stamped at the heel "Made in USA" - but these were high grade, import instruments, that have since created a bit of buzz and mystery in the deep corners of Fender chatrooms and guitar collectors.
Olympic white finish appearing in very good condition with simple surface level scratches, the body is contoured properly, internally routed with a standard neck pocket and an HSH pickup route. While the bridge pickup has been swapped for a Seymour Duncan humbucker - the remainder of the electronics appear original, the neck and middle pickups stamped 016730 like that on a MIM issue from the same era. Standard sized pots, and an enclosed YM-50 pickup selector. The important detail is that this guitar sounds and plays great - mostly standard to a MIJ or MIM.
The neck is very interesting, with an accurate ST-40, vintage correct headstock cut, with truss rod access by the nut. 21 fret slab rosewood fingerboard, it is dated in Japanese format 20/9/90 indicating a September 1990 build. The neck has a medium slim C profile that measures .84" in depth at the first position, tapering up to about .87" at the twelfth fret. The frets and fingerboard are in good condition, without divots. The action is easy, without a shim, measuring 4-5/64" in height at the twelfth fret. Unmarked tuner set functions as it should overall.
