Julie prepared a comfortable bed for me downstairs and the first one to comfort me was Penny the wonder dog. She had to sniff all around my back to sense what was wrong and then she just snuggle up against me.

INSTITUTIONS AND HOME

September 26th, 2022

Good Morning Folks

There is no more evident time of the relationship between mind and body than when you’re trying to recover from a serious physical ailment. I have spent nearly 3 weeks at institutions of health care. At both Rochester Unity Hospital and the Jewish Senior Life Rehab Center I received superior and genuinely compassionate care and treatment. However, by definition, an institution is what it is. It can give care; it can give assistance and everything is done according to a prescribed program. Institutional experiences are best when they are temporary. I never really liked being a part of or being involved in or being absorbed by any kind of institution at all. I took advantage of it but now I am where the real healing takes place…and that is home. Home is where the best healing takes place because healing requires the simultaneous absorption of mind and body working together. Institutions tend to take care of your body but they don’t do that much for your mind set. And they certainly never work the two together. Here, at home, things just smell right. Julie has fixed up a nice comfortable place for me to recuperate and begin the hard work of retraining muscles and nerve endings so that they work together and I will be able to at least…..Well, what is an appropriate goal? Is it some feat of strength? Is it some ability to move the legs and feet with the mind? I think something that involves both mind and body…. so my goal is to use up all the basil in the garden and make the very best pesto I’ve ever made! Nothing involves mind and body like cooking!

Once again I want to thank all the people who reached out to me over the past few weeks. I am truly blessed and thankful. I can definitely feel the positive energy that is sent to me through each and every one of those messages. That energy is being put into all my retraining and rehabilitation. I thank my wonderful wife Julie for rescuing me from the institution and bringing me back to the peaceful setting of Penn Yan. Hopefully within a short time I will be ready for some guests.

Best Regards,

John Bernunzio
