This is an original fretless banjo by maker Richard Spencer a teacher, player and composer of fretted instruments who established a workshop and studio at 84 High Street, Clapham, London, in 1880. The banjo has a thick, ebony fingerboard with simple ornamentation and approximately 28"1/2 scale. The rim is 12" in diameter and spun over. There are some mismatched hooks and nuts but overall very clenn and original with a carved ivory tailpiece. Set up traditionally with Nylgut strings.
