1:00 - 2:30 PM - Double & Drop Thumb Banjo - Basic Clawhammer

This workshop will strengthen your basic skills and teach you the key to creating the percussive sound of the “Double-thumb and Drop-thumb” techniques. You will learn to double-thumb, drop- thumb, the “Galax Lick” and enhance your ability to play any tune by integrating the rhythm and the melody to get that Southern Appalachian old-time banjo sound!

3:00 - 4:30 PM - Learn a Tune, Build a Tune – Clawhammer Style

The best way to learn tunes in the old-time tradition is by ear. Once you know a tune, the subtle variations that make it interesting - both musically and rhythmically - use techniques like double thumb, drop thumb, the “Galax Lick”, skip strokes, bass and scale runs, chord options, and triplets. In this workshop, we will build a tune starting with the chorded backup, and then add rhythmic and melodic variations that can help you to blend with others or stand out on your own.
