The British Sound, Made in Italy!
Built in Recanati, Italy by EKO for Vox, the Sidewinder first appeared in the 1967 "Vox, It's What's Happening" and 1968 "The Sound That Travels With The Stars" catalogs. With a design doubtlessly influenced by the Gibson EB-2, the Sidewinder included a series of battery powered on-board effects, an idea doubtlessly ahead of its time. The Sidewinder IV was described in the 1968 Vox catalog as follows:
"A brilliant all new 4 string double cutaway electric acoustic bass guitar. Has a built in G tuner, distortion boost, treble and bass booster. All new easy to fret fast-neck with Vox double T bar and adjustable steel rod. Two exclusive VOX Ferro-sonic pickups. Fully adjustable bridge. One volume, two tone controls, 3 position pickup selector switch. Jumbo chrome plated machine heads. Sunburst or Cherry"
This bass comes to us in very good used condition, with light wear and some cracking in the finish as one would expect with a vintage bass. Some mild forward relief is present, but the neck is still straight. It has a low action of 6/64” at the 12th fret, with room for the bridge to come down. The frets are in decent shape, with only some mild wear present lower on the neck. With a short scale length of 30” and a narrow nut width of 1 3/8”, it is comfortable and easy to play for the guitarist and bassist alike.
All of the built in effects are perfectly functioning, with an excellent sounding treble booster and distortion - with maybe the most perfect fuzz bass tone we have heard in the store. Its unaffected bass tone is equally great, fat and punchy sounding, which compliments the set of flats it has on it well.
