Rare configuration of a Vega Tubaphone No. 9 with 11-13/16" diameter rim and 27" scale neck; this fine banjo was owned for many years by folk legend Big Jim Griffith (Tucson, AZ); as one would expect, the sound is powerful and rich..a perfect banjo for folk styles. All original rim assembly with perforated Tubaphone tonering, notched tension hoop; later Kershner style tailpiece. The maple neck features a long heel carving, with beautiful engraved pearwork; geared tuners were added on peghead at some point, though the gold-plated friction fifth w/ large pearl button is original; light fret wear; well repaired heel crack with finish work at time of repair; finish has chipped of face of dowel stick a bit as well. Original hard shell case present with lots of original transit stickers and homespun exterior fiber glass repair.
