This is a very early fretless banjo with patented method for tightening the head from the inside. This is a simple instrument with solid brass rim and original round dowel and flat rim stick reading "Tilton's Improvement Patented April 24th 1866. Manufactured by C. Bruno and Son". There are two reinforcing rods inside the rim, a round wooden dowel and a flat stick which retains the original stamped label. The banjo is very playable and has fretless, one piece maple neck with newer ebony tuning pegs. There is a repaired crack on the round stick, but overall the banjo is very nice original condition and very playable. It retains its original brass ornate tail piece. Set Up with nylon strings and a new, calf skin head.
